Welcome to Tracks 4 Trauma.

Tracks 4 Trauma is Giz A Break's fundraising initiative. It's for grown ups who want to help us raise funds while also having magical experiences. We run two types of Tracks 4 Trauma events:

With the income and donations we generate from Tracks 4 Trauma events, we can offer increased access to our programs for kids with complex trauma who really need this. Find out more about Tracks 4 Trauma and complex trauma in the FAQ section.

Single and multi-day adventures

The multi-day activities are largely based on a remote 4x4 touring model, while the single-day adventures include a mix of activities from four-wheel driving, hiking, trout fishing, and canoeing. We're qualified and licensed tour operators for parks across Victoria and NSW and are confident that we can support you well from technical and social perspectives.

4-7 Day Off-road Tours

We take you along on some of our magical itineraries. Days will be packed with driving (we'll share some 4x4 tips and tricks with you), hiking, and fishing as well as exploring and relaxing around the camp fire. Of course, you'll also hear from the Giz A Break team of how we'll be using the funds you've raised. Spots are limited - we can take a maximum of 10 participants on these tagalong tours. Check out the current and upcoming adventures below and get involved.

Questions...

FAQs about the Tracks 4 Trauma concept

Who is Tracks 4 Trauma for?

The idea of Tracks 4 Trauma is to offer adventures for adults who want to have an amazing experience AND financially support Giz A Break. We'll invest the surplus from these adventures into programs for young people who need it.

Who will benefit?

Everyone involved benefits:

  • Youth at-risk who can go on adventures we fund with the revenue generated by Tracks 4 Trauma
  • Giz A Break because it can diversify income streams and deliver flexible programs that meet our young people's needs and that don't rely on government grants (short term, bureaucratic, inflexible)
  • YOU! Being active in nature is good for the mind and body. Plus, you're doing things with other likeminded adults, and that's good for you, too.
Why are you doing this?

Because the odds are stacked against kids with complex trauma, and through no fault of their own.

  • Young people with complex trauma are at much higher risk of serious mental illness, substance use, and suicide
  • They are less likely to access the healthcare system when needed, and are overrepresented in the child protection and justice systems
  • Kids with complex trauma have lower educational attainment also.
Tracks 4 Trauma is our fundraising mechanism that allows us to offer programs for young people with complex trauma who do not access other mainstream support structures.
What is complex trauma?

Think of it like this: You break your dominant leg really badly (complex fracture) and don’t receive medical care in time. Your fracture doesn’t heal well and there are day-to-day tasks you find painful, difficult, or impossible. You can only take short walks with the dog, you have to learn how to kick the footy with your other foot, a walk on the beach is agony, and you're selling your manual car to buy an automatic.

Complex trauma isn't that different. It's the emotional and neurological injury caused by living through multiple or ongoing traumatic events, particularly during childhood. The most common causes of trauma in the young people we work with are a combination of neglect (particularly in the first few years of life), sexual, physical and emotional abuse, and family violence.

Childhood trauma causes brains to develop differently, with a strong emphasis on the part of the brain responsible for the fight / flight response. This also causes kids with complex trauma to produce more stress hormones more often or even constantly. Unlike the broken bone we started off with, you cannot see a physical impact - but you can see the impact in behaviours. Think of the kid who gets angry and lashes out at the drop of a hat. Think of the kid who seems to be on an emotional roller coaster all the time. The kid who trusts nobody, who doesn’t turn up for school most days. Think of the kid who gets suspended on a weekly basis for not wearing school uniform, for playing the clown in class, mocking teachers, getting into fights, or smoking in the toilets and being completely reckless. That’s who we’re there for.

Why would I not go with a conventional tour operator?
  • Did you know that we're actually licensed tour operators across Victorian state and national parks as well as a heap of parks in NSW (Mungo, Kinchego, Mutawintji, etc.)? That we run about 20 multi-day camps for young people across the two states each year?
  • In all seriousness, we reckon our team does adventures for adults better than anyone else around. We're fun, creative, experienced, educated, and open-minded - and we're experts at understanding emotions, too, so if you feel you need a break, maybe this is just what you need.
  • Or is your real question: Why should I spend more on a tagalong tour with Tracks 4 Trauma when I can spend less... Well, that's true, but we'll leave you to think this through:
    • You're actually doing a really good thing while having fun. We're not aiming to get rich by charging more, we're aiming to invest a surplus into the kids who need it. So, you'll have had a hand in the impact we're making in young people's lives.
    • Cheaper ain't better.
    • Donations are tax deductible. Giz A Break is a registered charity with deductible gift recipient status.
Can I book a custom camp or day out for work?

My oath you can. We welcome enquiries from private and corporate groups. Complete this expression of interest and we'll be in touch.

Is my payment tax-deductible?

Yes and no. When you book one of our Tracks 4 Trauma adventures, you will be required to pay a participation fee before you can complete your booking. In the booking form, we'll also encourage you to make a donation (in addition to your participation fee). Your donation is tax-deductible. Your participation fee is not tax-deductible. HOWEVER... if you book a Tracks 4 Trauma adventure for your work (for example, as part of a professional development initiative focussing on interpersonal skills), it may be tax deductible.

FAQs for Single & Multi-Day Adventures

What exactly happens when I register?

Here's what happens:

  1. You'll receive an email that confirms that we've received your registration.
  2. Once we receive your payment confirmation, we send you a "Welcome on Board" email that includes itinerary, what to bring, where we meet, and the name and contact details of your adventure lead. It also includes a vehicle checklist you need to complete before departure.
  3. And then it's time to embark on your adventure
Can I get a ride with you?

Possibly. For our single-day adventures, we're happy to give up to 3 people a lift. For our multi-day adventures, we'll charge an additional 50% because you'll also be needing other equipment we carry (our fridge, stove, water canisters, tie downs, etc.).

Can I ride my motorbike?

No. It's too risky for us and we aren't insured for it.

Can I bring my kids?

Yes, if they're at least 15 years old. They must be under your supervision - our staff will not be able to provide supervision on these adventures. Please note that we ask for the same donation for each participant, irrespective of age, and that they are registered separately.

You're asking for more than a usual tourism operator would ask for. Why would I not go with them instead?

Because when you come with us, you get to experience a magical adventure while also doing a bloody good thing: Enabling us to run more programs for more kids who really need it. Plus, our staff are educated, engaging, and experienced and maybe there are a few things beyond four-wheel driving you can take away with you. We reckon our itineraries and knowledge of the area is also better than most, and we're better equipped than any tour operator we've come across.

I want to book in a whole team, is that possible?

Yes, of course!* We can also cater for corporate events. Call us early so we can make arrangements that meet your needs. We're happy to collaborate on media releases, socials, etc.

EXCEPT if you're a tobacco, alcohol, vape, or fast food manufacturer or retailer. We're a health promotion charity, and these products cause premature death. And the companies that make and sell them have marketing machines that specialise in targeting vulnerable young people. And we're here to support vulnerable young people. So... it's a clash of interests and purpose, and a no.

Do I need to bring food?

Yes. For single days, we'll stop at a bakery or cafe along the way, so you don't need to prepare much - but bring an apple and a couple of musli-bars for snacks. They go hard after a hike - promise! For multi-days, please bring everything you need for food and drinks.

Can I get a refund?

If we have to reschedule and you cannot attend the new date(s), we will offer you participation in one of our later adventures of equivalent value. We do not refund if:

  • You change your mind or cannot participate for reasons outside our control
  • If we have to choose a different location for reasons outside our control (weather, etc) and you choose to no longer participate

Any donations you may have made are not refundable under any circumstances.
